Greetings from the Pastor
Fourteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time:
The Rest We Need
Today we gather together to celebrate the Mass for the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time and we welcome to our Parish Fr. Sydney Fernandez, who comes to us from St. Roch’s Church in Kahuku. He will be taking Msgr. Romeo’s place, who is leaving us after three years of service to the parish and the Diocese.
As we say goodbye to Fr. Romeo, it is with a heavy heart. We have worked together in harmony and have come to rely on him very much. I have told him that the door will always be open to him and that whenever he comes to Hawaii there will be a bed for him.
In talking to Fr. Syd, I learned that he has been in Kahuku for fourteen years. He followed my friend Bill Mattimore when Bill went to Waimanalo. Please make him welcome because coming to a downtown parish will be a great change in his life.
The Gospel story today stresses that if we rely on Jesus we will find the burden of life light and the yoke we are asked to carry easy. If we make those words a part of our life we will find that following Jesus is something we can do. Rely on Jesus and the rest can be easy.
Lately we have been studying the changes that are coming with the new liturgical year and we will begin your catechism this month. There are plenty of aids that will be given to you so that you can ease into the changes.
You might ask why we are starting training in July when the changes don’t take place until late November and early December. Anytime change is made there is some confusion. We’re going to do fine but with early learning, the changes will be smoother.
Our Outreach Program continues to flourish. Mike Prevost would be proud of what is happening because he was a big part of it all. When a program has a good foundation, the transition to new leadership is easy. We continue to help those in need as we always have. As the Pastor here, I am prejudice. I have always thought that the way we help who are in need is the best in Hawaii.
